The municipality of Katwijk has approved the permit application for a new pharmaceutical manufacturing facility by US-based Eli Lilly. The planned €3 billion investment will create around 500 jobs and further strengthen the life sciences and health ecosystem in the Leiden region.
Eli Lilly plans to manufacture medicines for diabetes and obesity at the new facility, which will be located near Valkenburg Lake in Katwijk. The municipal council approved the construction permit by a large majority, with 28 votes in favour and four against.
The facility is expected to become an important addition to the region’s growing life sciences and health sector. When announcing its plans, Eli Lilly CEO David Ricks highlighted the proximity of Leiden Bio Science Park, as well as the region’s connectivity and access to several airports, as factors in the company’s decision to locate its new manufacturing site in Katwijk.
The Eli Lilly facility is planned for Katwijk, as part of Leiden Bio Science Park, and is expected to create around 500 jobs.
