Starting January 1, 2025, Leiden will hold the title of National Education City for an entire year, announced this week by the National Education Week Foundation.
Each October, the foundation hosts National Education Week (NOW), advocating that investing in education is essential to making a difference for future generations.
Year-Round Activities
Leiden is the first city to extend its Education City initiatives beyond Education Week, with activities running throughout the year. These will be coordinated by the Leiden Education Fieldlab (LEF), a network organization uniting education, business, cultural institutions, Leiden Knowledge City, and the city of Leiden.
Equal Opportunities
Alderman Abdelhaq Jermoumi (Equal Opportunities, Youth, and Education) and Alderman Fleur Spijker (Economy, Knowledge, Sports, and Health) believe this title suits Leiden well. Jermoumi notes, “Leiden offers the full spectrum of education, from preschool to university, with a strong network of education professionals dedicated to creating equal opportunities, allowing children and youth to develop their talents.”
City of Knowledge
Spijker adds, “In 2025, our country’s oldest university, Leiden University, celebrates its 450th anniversary. This milestone underscores Leiden as a true city of knowledge, where groundbreaking discoveries are made, talent flourishes, and our knowledge economy continues to innovate.”
