Job Summary

Due to our continuing growth we have an exciting opportunity for a talented, highly motivated Environment, Health & Safety Officer at our state of the art drug discovery site in Leiden, the Netherlands.
 
As EHS officer you are responsible for ensuring the efficient management of health and safety by implementing and maintaining an effective occupational health and safety management system.

You will be part of a small, international team which is responsible for compliance and executing on standards as well as the design and development of the areas of occupational health and safety (accident, health and fire protection and health management), environmental protection and energy/waste management. 
All this is done in a team-oriented, result-driven, international research environment that provides an excellent career opportunity for an enthusiastic and motivated individual.

In your role you will be:

  • directing the site safety committee (chemical safety, biosafety, general safety, occupational health) and first aid training program.
  • responsible for legal compliance with prevailing Dutch, EU and company laws and regulations. 
  • advising on all EHS matters, organizing and carrying out internal inspections, instructing and providing training to local staff and new starters
  • appointed as the “prevention” expert (Preventiemedewerker) with all associated legal requirements such as performing and maintaining the Risk Inventory and Evaluation. All in collaboration with the Works Council and Arbodienst. 
  • drafting, reviewing and/or approving and coordinate policy-making activities with regard to safe working conditions 
  • the local Chemical Safety Officer ensuring compliance against legislation, corporate and local procedures such as the chemical risk assessment procedure
  • the site contact person and representative for the EHS to corporate (US-based), and divisional  (sites in Netherlands, Belgium and the UK) EHS community; liaise with our colleagues of other business units in Den Bosch and Groningen 
  • responsible for the consignment of dangerous goods and aspects of shipping safety
  • working towards a regulatory role such as the Leiden Test Substance Officer (Dutch Opioid Act); applying and keeping track of the permits, supervising use of controlled substances and regular reporting to the authorities
  • working with the local Biosafety officer to ensure compliance to GMO laws and regulations

The following are minimum requirements related to the EHS officer position:

  • Bachelor's degree/HBO or equivalent level of degree is required. 
  • Dutch degree of ‘Hogere Veiligheidskunde’ or equivalent 
  • A minimum of 5+ years of experience in (Dutch) EHS management within laboratory environment, an IATA certificate is a pre 
  • Fluent in English as well as Dutch (written and oral) 
  • You are pragmatic and at the same time adhering to the complex rules and able to advise, influence and engage site management and colleagues. 
  • You are a team player with cross-cultural skills as you will need to work with our team in Leiden, Beerse (Belgium) and various sites in the UK as well as Corporate (USA)
  • You will be a focal point for our Leiden team and site management: good communication skills, able to train and guide staff on all levels on safety aspects
