Antibodies in the blood can protect us from disease, but sometimes they can also make us ill. These are called autoimmune diseases. At the LUMC, extensive research is being done in this field. For one of these diseases, MuSK myasthenia gravis, the disease mechanism has been unraveled.
Researchers discovered that a specific type of antibody, IgG4, plays a role in causing the illness in these patients. However, they also found a way to reverse the harmful effects of these antibodies. This led to the development of a completely new therapy, which is now being tested in patients.
Researcher Maartje Huijbers, from the Department of Human Genetics and the Department of Neurology, takes us on the journey from fundamental research to the development of a new therapy for people with muscle diseases.
