Salonlezing – Silenced Womb: The Ignored Menopausal Woman | Dutch Bio Science Week

This event will be in Dutch.

Menopause is still often seen as a major source of fear for women. Discarded, forgotten, old, no longer (sexually) attractive, useless. These are words that frequently come up when talking about this stage of life. Where does that idea come from? And what effect does it have on how women are portrayed? And most importantly: how does it make women feel?

In Silenced Womb, artist Petra Kroon  explores how the medical world, past and present, has viewed women in this phase of life. She explains how society thinks about them, and shows how menopausal women are depicted in media and the arts using video clips and photos. Kroon also addresses what these portrayals mean for women: how they feel and how they behave.
In her lecture, she also shares various suggestions for how we can engage with menopausal women in a more respectful and inclusive way.

About the Speaker
Petra Kroon, MA, is an artist and photographer. As part of her Master’s program Photography & Society at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague, she conducted research on the representation of menopausal women: Silenced Womb. Her work has been exhibited both nationally and internationally and is part of various collections.

Her fascination with media, photography, documentary, journalism, and how it shapes our understanding of the world runs like a thread through her entire body of work. She critically examines the social and personal consequences of these representations. Her starting point is always personal experience, which she connects to broader social, cultural, and political themes, with a particular focus on women’s health, both mental and physical.
