Four Leiden researchers receive ERC Advanced Grant

Four Leiden University researchers have been awarded the prestigious ERC Advanced Grant, each receiving €2.5 million to advance their projects spanning history, medicine, diabetes, and climate adaptation.

Professor Bleda Düring will investigate the origins and persistence of social inequality in late prehistoric Cyprus by analyzing extensive archaeological datasets, shedding light on an important chapter of world history.

In medical research, Professor Andrea Evers’ five-year project, CONTEXT MATTERS, explores how expectations, both conscious and unconscious, impact treatment outcomes, aiming to improve therapies by reducing medication use and side effects.

At Leiden University Medical Center, Professor Bart Roep leads efforts to develop novel strategies for curing type 1 diabetes by making insulin-producing beta cells less visible to the immune system, focusing on reducing cell stress to protect them.

Meanwhile, Professor Diana Suhardiman studies community-based climate adaptation in Southeast Asia, examining how local knowledge and institutions help manage climate change, contributing to more equitable and inclusive climate governance.

Each project reflects Leiden’s commitment to multidisciplinary research with a global impact.
