Leiden Bio Science Park is taking concrete steps to increase biodiversity across its grounds, moving beyond ornamental landscaping to create habitats that support a wide range of plant and animal species. With input from ecologists and urban planners, the park’s latest sustainability strategy includes actions such as planting native trees, installing nesting boxes, and creating nature-inclusive riverbanks.
The goal is to shift the perception of green space from decorative to functional. Native grasses and flowering plants attract pollinators, while green buffers and quiet zones offer birds and small mammals places to nest and feed. Smart mowing techniques, seasonal planting, and ecological water management all support a more resilient local ecosystem.
These changes are part of a broader vision to make the park not just a centre of innovation but a healthy environment to work, study and live. Projects are being developed in close collaboration with local partners, and employees and residents are encouraged to share ideas or join initiatives.
