Professor Meta Roestenberg from Leiden University Medical Center has won the Mercator Sapiens Stimulus prize, worth one million euros, for her work on developing a new malaria vaccine.
Malaria continues to be a major global health challenge, with 250 million people affected every year and over 600,000 deaths. While two WHO-approved malaria vaccines are available, they offer limited protection. Roestenberg’s research, using live malaria parasites, shows promising results with nearly complete protection—an important step forward in the fight against malaria.
At the Leiden Bio Science Park, we are proud to be part of a community that celebrates such incredible achievements. It’s inspiring to see local researchers like Professor Roestenberg reaching new heights, and we look forward to seeing what’s next in the fight against malaria.
