Starting in January 2026, the LUMC and the Reinier de Graaf Hospital will formally collaborate in a new Regional Expertise Center for Upper GI. The surgical care for esophageal cancer at both locations is already of very high quality. This center will focus on highly complex care for patients with esophageal and stomach cancers, bringing together knowledge, experience, and capacity to further enhance the quality of care.
The collaboration follows years of informal cooperation between the two hospitals and is prompted by the recently established volume standards for cancer care. By concentrating care at the LUMC, esophageal cancer surgeries that are currently performed at Reinier de Graaf will from now on take place in Leiden. The pre- and postoperative care for Reinier de Graaf’s patients will remain in Delft. Further away when necessary, close to the patient whenever possible!
In addition to patient care, LUMC and Reinier de Graaf will jointly invest in education and scientific research in the field of Upper GI surgery. The aim is to further improve the quality of care provided through higher volumes and shared expertise.
The plans have been coordinated with health insurers, hospitals, patient organizations, and medical specialists in the region and have been formalized within the OncoWest oncology network. “By pooling our knowledge and experience, we can offer patients the best possible care in the right place,” the parties involved said.
