As of June, the Leiden Bio Science Park team has been joined by Gerwin Zomer, who steps into the role of Account Manager Physical Living Environment. To get to know him a bit better, we had a short conversation with Gerwin about his background, interests, and ambitions for the role.
You joined the Leiden Bio Science Park team in June. Could you briefly introduce yourself to our community?
Absolutely! My name is Gerwin Zomer, I’m 35 years old, and I live in Oegstgeest with my wife and two children. I’ve always lived in this region, so the area feels very familiar; it’s home. In my spare time, I like to go running. Sometimes I’ll include the ‘heartline’ in my route, but I usually prefer heading into nature, forests, dunes, and beaches make the best trails. I used to play football myself, but these days I coach my son’s team. It’s a great way to stay connected to the sport and support young players who are just as passionate.
What is your role at Leiden Bio Science Park, and what does your work involve?
I recently started as Account Manager Physical Living Environment at the Leiden Bio Science Park. My background is in commercial HBO education, and I bring with me around fifteen years of experience, including time at a medical device manufacturer.
At Leiden Bio Science Park, my role focuses on the physical living environment, a topic that’s becoming increasingly important as the park continues to grow and evolve. I act as a link between companies, residents, the university, the municipality, and other stakeholders. My job is to identify bottlenecks, facilitate collaboration, and help ensure that themes like liveability, safety, sustainability, and mobility are properly addressed and implemented.
What excites you about working at Leiden Bio Science Park?
The pace of development here is inspiring. There’s so much happening, new initiatives, ongoing expansion, and an active, engaged community. It’s a dynamic environment, and I’m really glad to be part of it. I look forward to building strong connections within the ecosystem and contributing to initiatives that enhance both the park and the surrounding area.
We’re happy to have Gerwin on board and look forward to the positive impact he’ll bring to the Leiden Bio Science Park community!
Marieke Vinkenoog and Simon Christian Hansmann have been awarded the Krijn Rietveld Memorial Innovation Awards for their research in blood donation and colorectal cancer. Vinkenoog’s work on predictive modeling for donor eligibility and Hansmann’s identification of cancer cells linked to tumor recurrence exemplify the integration of advanced scientific methods to address pressing health challenges.
