Young researchers win Krijn Rietveld Awards for discoveries in blood donation and colorectal cancer

Marieke Vinkenoog and Simon Christian Hansmann have been awarded the Krijn Rietveld Memorial Innovation Awards for their research in blood donation and colorectal cancer. Vinkenoog's work on predictive modeling for donor eligibility and Hansmann's identification of cancer cells linked to tumor recurrence exemplify the integration of advanced scientific methods to address pressing health challenges.

On September 2, 2025, Marieke Vinkenoog and Simon Christian Hansmann were honored with the Krijn Rietveld Memorial Innovation Awards for their research in blood donation and colorectal cancer. Vinkenoog received the Doctoral Societal Impact Award for her development of data-driven models that predict donor hemoglobin levels, enhancing the efficiency of blood donation processes. Hansmann was awarded the Graduate Societal Impact Award for his use of 3D cell models to identify cancer cells responsible for tumor recurrence, potentially informing future therapeutic strategies. The awards, presented by the Leiden University Fund and dsm-firmenich, recognize innovative research with significant societal impact.
