Wennink Report drives broad media attention for red biotechnology sector

The publication of the Wennink Report has led to extensive national and regional media coverage on the role of red biotechnology in the future of the Dutch economy and healthcare system. Following its presentation at Nieuwspoort on 12 January, attention quickly turned to the concrete implications for innovation, investment and collaboration across the life sciences ecosystem.

In the week after the Nieuwspoort presentation, the Minister of Health, Welfare and Sport, Jan Anthonie Bruijn, visited the Leiden University Medical Center where the formal handover of the sector input from the Dutch red biotechnology took place. This input was developed as part of the broader Wennink agenda and reflects the shared priorities of companies, knowledge institutions and science parks across the Netherlands, and has been handed over by Annemiek Verkamman, Carla Vos and Esther Peters.

During this period, the Leiden Bio Science Park served as one of the contact points for media enquiries, given its coordinating role in bringing together contributions from the red biotechnology sector. Coverage focused on the substance of the agenda rather than individual organisations, highlighting themes such as long term investment certainty, access to talent and capital, and the conditions needed to translate scientific excellence into patient impact.

The media attention confirms the relevance of the themes addressed in the report and the importance of continued collaboration between regions, partners and government.
