To celebrate the start of the new academic year, Calculemus is organizing a launch event on September 11th where you can learn more about the team, hear from guest speakers in the field, and challenge AI agents in a round of arcade-style games. Calculemus (calculemus.liacs.nl) is a newly formed student AI team at Leiden University, brought together by Thomas Moerland. Their goal as a team is to bring together students who want to build, discuss, and experiment with AI.
The program:
- 15:00 – 15:35: Team presentation
- 15:40 – 16:10: Guest speaker: Claartje Barkof, Scientist Integrator at GPT-NL, the Netherlands’ own sovereign language model, built by TNO, NFI, and SURF. She’ll share what it actually takes to build a national AI model from scratch.
- 16:15 – 16:45: Guest speaker: Frank Sierra, Senior AI Engineer at ML6, working on AI-driven protein engineering and pharma research. With a background spanning parasitology and neuroscience, he’ll talk about using AI as a toolkit to solve real scientific problems.
- 17:00 – 18:00: Game challenge against our AI agents, plus informal chats with the students over drinks
Date: Friday, September 11th
Doors open: 14:30, but feel free to join whichever part of the afternoon fits your schedule.
Location: Atrium EM1 (ground floor, by the former Bata café), Gorleus Building
