SpectaCell raises €6 million to accelerate drug development

For the Leiden Bio Science Park, it is great to see SpectaCell connecting its technology with the biotech ecosystem here in Leiden. SpectaCell will combine its technology development and cell analysis in Ghent with further validation and application within the Leiden Bio Science Park.

The Ghent-based company, a spin-off of imec, VIB and Universiteit Gent, has launched with €6 million in funding to further develop its advanced cell analysis platform. The technology helps pharmaceutical and biotech companies better understand what potential treatments do to individual cells, with the aim of providing results within hours rather than days.

Faster and more detailed insights into individual cells

The technology combines chip-based imaging and data analysis to track large numbers of individual cells and their interactions in detail. This allows researchers to identify differences between cells that conventional tests may overlook. SpectaCell initially focuses on immunotherapies, including cell therapies and T-cell engagers that help the immune system recognise and attack cancer cells.

By providing faster and more detailed insights into how treatments work, the platform aims to help researchers select promising drug candidates earlier, improve treatment development and reduce costs. In the longer term, the technology could also support manufacturing processes and quality control, using the same measurement platform from early-stage research through to production.

€6 million investment supports international growth

The €6 million funding round was led by imec.xpand, with participation from the Flanders Future Tech Fund (PMV), InnovationQuarter Capital, Qbic and VIB. The investment will support further development of the platform in collaboration with pharmaceutical and biotech companies, bringing it closer to market.

SpectaCell combines imec’s expertise in chip technology with VIB’s biological research capabilities and the scientific and clinical expertise of Ghent University and Ghent University Hospital. The company will develop its technology in Ghent while working with the biotech ecosystem in Leiden on further validation and applications.

The involvement of both Flemish and Dutch investors highlights the potential for cross-border collaboration between the two regions. By connecting technological innovation in Flanders with the strong life sciences ecosystem in South Holland, SpectaCell aims to develop solutions that help bring better treatments to patients faster.

We look forward to seeing how the collaboration between Ghent and Leiden develops. Congratulations to the SpectaCell team and all partners involved.
