The Secrets about Life on Earth
Curious about the world around you? Researchers at Naturalis Biodiversity Center uncover new secrets about life on Earth every day, with one goal: understanding and protecting our planet.
About Naturalis
Naturalis Biodiversity Center is the national research institute for biodiversity. We collect, preserve, and study life on Earth. From the smallest insects to the largest dinosaurs.
In our museum, we bring science to life for visitors of all ages. Through leading research and education, we contribute to the protection of biodiversity and raise awareness of the value of nature, both now and in the future.
Expedition Naturalis
In this cheerful family show, participants go on an expedition together at Naturalis. The participants will do what Naturalis does: collecting, preserving, researching, drawing, and even creating exhibitions. Dive underwater, dig up a dinosaur, and think about how to organize the collection efficiently. Everyone’s talents come in handy.
With every successful task, we build a piece of the Tower of Life, but… if things don’t go well, blocks are removed from the tower. Who will help keep the tower balanced?
All ages are welcome!

Behind the Scenes at the Naturalis Lab
How does research in the Naturalis lab actually work? The Naturalis museum is only a small part of Naturalis Biodiversity Center, the national research institute for nature.
Here you’ll discover how researchers study nature using powerful scanners and microscopes, and how they use DNA techniques to identify all species through their genetic material. A unique opportunity to see how science really works, up close!
Minimum age: 6 years
Times: to be announced
Duration: 30 minutes
Location: Meet at the desk at the Mendelweg entrance
Registration required!

Species Safari
Discover biodiversity at the Leiden Bio Science Park. Join Naturalis on a species safari.
Using nets, magnifying glasses, and identification cards, we map the species found outdoors around the museum. Will you join the search?
All ages are welcome!
This is an ongoing activity, no registration required
Location: Outside Naturalis by the pond next to the Stal
